Several motorists plying Cebu South Coastal Road in Cebu City were caught in a frenzy Tuesday as they hastily collected bundles of cash that had fallen from a damaged backpack of a money collector.
The incident occurred while the collector, who was riding a motorcycle, was en route to Mandaue City to remit the cash payment from kiosks at the South Road Properties, Nikko Sereno reported for GMA Regional TV "Balitang Bisdak" on "24 Oras."
The collector said he was about 50 meters away from the scene when a motorist alerted him of the incident.
He was confused when he saw money flying all over the place and he noticed that his bag was damaged.
He immediately made a U-turn and tried to block some vehicles from moving but could not go near because there were so many people gathered at the area.
Police managed to recover P2,083,000 out of the estimated P3 million to P4 million worth of cash that was inside the ruptured backpack.
"Kung maari, isauli nila dahil malaking pera at kung sakaling hindi masasauli, siya (money collector) rin ang magbabayad niyan," said Police Staff Sergeant Jonas Ricaplaza, Station 11 Desk Officer.
(If it is possible, the money should be returned because if not he (money collector) will be the one to pay.)
The collector, meanwhile, was emotional when he appealed to those who had picked up the scattered money, urging them to return it to him. — Sundy Locus/BAP, GMA Integrated News
