In the Early 1700s, the western communities were normally small. The highest building in every town is the church. As a result, during thunderstorms, these buildings are prone the getting hit by lightning, damaging the building, or sometimes killing people within it. Neighboring churches interprets this as a sign that God is not happy with how people worship in the said church.
Benjamin Franklin later invented the lightning rod as he studied electricity. His success saved the churches and the lives that could have been victims of the weather event.
Yet, religious people denounced him for the invention. They said it was a heresy. They believe this invention is thwarting God's will.
